What to Do With Jewellery You Don't Wear

Getting rid of jewellery feels bad. Jewellery is always at least one of two things: expensive or sentimental. Therefore, having a collection, even a small one, of unused items can feel as bad as throwing it all in the bin. We all have at least one instance of this. There’s an unopened box or maybe it was opened once when it was gifted to you. Maybe it was an impulse buy and you’ve rethought your style, or your style changed ages ago but you’ve committed now.

So what do you do with all those boxes or tarnished silver and gold? We’re looking at the options you have for what to do with all the jewellery you don’t wear. Read on for details.

Sell it

There are more and more places to sell your jewellery today. The classics is a jewellery store, which is particularly fruitful if your jewellery is quality. Another is a pawn shop, but you can also go online and get a pretty penny if you were to sell your Engagement Ring or other less expensive or sentimental jewellery.

Alternatively, you can rent out your jewellery. Some services let you lend your jewellery to others for special events in exchange for payment. This allows you to earn money from jewellery you're no longer using.

Donate it

There is always the option of donating your jewellery to charity. It’s a simple solution that allows you to feel good about your donation, especially as it is likely to bring in more money than that moth-bitten jumper from last Christmas. Charities like Goodwill and Salvation Army accept jewellery donations.

Alternatively, stop by your local community theatre and ask if they need any props. It’s hard to find a Blue Heart of the Ocean jewel for Titanic: The Musical, for example, or a One Ring of Mordor.

Repurpose it

Repurpose shops like Shopify and Vinted will let you sell your pre-owned clothing and accessories, and Benadato - Jewelry & Diamond Buyers can allow you to sell your diamonds. There is also the more general Facebook marketplace or you can create a shop on Etsy or eBay.

Alos, consider resetting your jewellery. You can have stones removed from old settings and reset into new jewellery designs. A jeweller can help turn heirloom pieces into something modern you'll wear again.

Gift it

There’s nothing wrong with repurposing a piece of jewellery as a gift, if it’s in good shape. You might want to run it through some silver dip first, but you can gift jewellery as gifts for birthdays, holidays, graduations, etc. Old jewellery is especially nice for sentimental value. Friends or family may cherish pieces that no longer suit your style. Just make sure not to gift it to the person who gave it to you in the first place. That’s an embarrassing mistake.

Alternatively, you can wait a while to gift them. Save them for future generations to enjoy. Much like fashion and interior design trends, jewellery trends tend to come back around. Your future loved ones are likely to love your jewellery and even more so because it was a gift from you. You might one day see them wearing it with their graduation cap or wedding veil.
